Debut –
New signing Sasha Adamson made her first start in Ipswich colours covering at Right Back in place of injured Maria Boswell and Ellie Rossiter. A really good showing by Sasha, making some intelligent runs forward and assisting Sophie Peskett down the right side of the pitch. Adamson was quick on the ball and brought the players around her into the game.
Key Events –
An emphatic victory for Ipswich Town after a dominant first half which saw the Tractor Girls go into the half time break 7-0 up. Sophie Peskett go the Suffolk side off to a good start 5 minutes in when she got on the end of a cross at the far post and nodded the ball into the back of the net. It wasn’t long before the speedy winger got her second and started dreaming of a possible 1st half hat-trick when she got on the end of Anna Grey’s cross and stabbed the ball home.
17 minutes in and a Paige Peake corner was turned into their own net by a Cambridge United defender making the near post. Town striker, Natasha Thomas, bagged a hat-track in the 10 goal win and opened her account when Eloise King slipped a ball through the Defence for Thomas to bury past the keeper. Sophie Peskett was getting involved in setting up goals as well when her cross was met by the head of Thomas to get her 2nd of the match in the 28th minute.
On the half hour mark, the Referee pointed to the spot to award Ipswich a penalty. Paige Peake was more than happy to step up and get her 4th goal of the season. Sophie Peskett was setting up another goal, this time for Anna Grey to place low into the goal and away from the keeper.
Into the second half and Town didn’t leave it long before finding the net again when Natasha Thomas chipped the ball over the onrushing keeper and the ball eventually rolled over the line with Anna Grey unselfishly shielding the ball to ensure it went in.
Thomas was replaced by youngster, and former Cambridge United striker, Zoe Barrett after 68 minutes and it only took her 10 minutes to find the net herself. Amy-Leigh Abrehart, who come on to replace Sophie Peskett, provided a low cross and Barrett was more than happy to get on the end and fire it past the keeper.
The roles reversed for Ipswich’s 10th and final goal when Barrett’s shot was palmed away by the keeper but only as far as Amy-Leigh who finished it and got herself on the score sheet as well.
Ipswich being dominant from the start, Ipswich keeper Lucy Williamson, had minimal work to do due to Towns solid performance across the board.
The Ups and Downs –
When you come away with a 10-0 win, it’s a struggle to come away with any down points, but injuries to Maddie Biggs, Maria Boswell and Ellie Rossiter will cover that and town now have a rest away from League games as they face Peterborough Northeren Star next Sunday in the FA Cup.
Upside? well, aside from the score-line, a brilliant performance from debutant, Sasha Adamson and also the array of goal scorers in the team. Any football fan will know that a striker will have a dry spell each season so it will be reassuring for Joe Sheehan to know that he has goals coming from all areas of his team and not just the strikers.
Player Of The Match –
Although Natasha Thomas’s hat-track was a thing of beauty, Sophie Peskett’s all round performance was something to admire. Not only 2 goals but also 2 assists combined with 100% effort from the winger gave us no choice but to award it to her for a second time this season. Sophie looks full of confidence and her skill on the ball is giving defenders nightmares. We really have a talented player on our hands with a bright future in the game.
Joe’s Joy –
Joe Sheehan was obviously overjoyed by this result and spoke of his pride with club Media officer, Kieren Standley following the game –
“Brilliant, I think it’s as good as we’ve probably seen from us I think”
“We played some really good stuff, we do set our expectations high, but for me today, we were excellent.”
Officials –
A poor show from this referee when we last encountered her in the opening game of the season at home to Hashtag United, but this time round was a much better performance from Lorraine Catchpole. Most decisions were right and given the correct way, although it seemed a very quiet game for her until a few Cambridge players started losing their heads near the end of the game. A 8/10 rating seems fair this time.
